As a history teacher and author of historical fiction, I greatly enjoyed the account of the snowball fight. The "happy-go-lucky" abandon with which the soldiers met the snowfall underlines the deep tragedy of their circumstances--as they desperately seized upon any fleeting moment of joy they could find, not knowing whether they would be alive the next day, week, or month.
